In the program's first-ever NCAA Division-III national tournament match the Piedmont College volleyball team was defeated 3-0 by #8 Emory University this evening at regional host Austin College in Sherman, TX. The second-seeded Eagles controlled both sides of the net and handed the seventh-seeded Lions the 30-13, 30-15, and 30-9 loss to conclude the 2007 season with an overall record of 24-9.
In the first game the Lions went up 1-0 to record the first point of NCAA postseason history for the Piedmont College volleyball program. Emory then rattled off five consecutive points just three serves later to take a 6-2 lead. PC attempted to get back in the match with three straight points to get the score to 9-6 but the Eagles then ended the game on a 21-7 run that included a run of seven consecutive points.
In the second game PC held a 7-4 lead with three straight points on serve but Emory again went on a devastating run winning 10 consecutive points to take control 14-7. The Eagles tacked on a pair of five-point runs to close out the game which saw PC's point total get doubled.
In the third and final game the eighth-ranked Eagles offense took over completely and the Lions could not force enough sideouts to climb back. After Piedmont got wihtin five points early, EU finished the match on a 23-7 run to earn the victory and advance to the regional semifinal tomorrow.
NIKKI COLE led the Piedmont offense with five kills while
SARAH LANE and
KATIE TUCKER chipped in with three kills respectively.
JENNIFER GRANLUND and
KALIN DEMARRAIS posted eight digs apiece while
TYLER BALDONADO posted 12 assists.
