Men's Basketball Team Advances To Championship Game With Huge Comback Win Over Catholic

Jake Baldwin Leads The Way For PC With Game-High 30 Points

Sophomore Michael Rubio notched 18 points and three steals helping lead PC into the championship game of the NCWC Roger Taylor Invitational.

After winning the 2006 NC Wesleyan College Roger Taylor Invitational, the Piedmont College men's basketball team has placed itself in position to defend the title with a 92-88 victory over Catholic University tonight in Rocky Mount, NC. PC rallied from a seven-point halftime deficit to record its fourth victory of the season and set up the championship game against tournament host NCWC tomorrow at 3:00.

The Lions found themselves down 30-27 with seven minutes remaining in the first half before Catholic was able to go on a 9-0 run to reach the biggest lead of the first half. PC finished strong and entered intermission with only a 45-38 deficit.

It was a slow starting second half for Piedmont as CU expanded the lead to 63-44 just six minutes in marking the largest lead in the game. Catholic maintained a 68-50 lead until PC exploded on a 17-4 run over the next three minutes to get within five points.

PC took their first lead of the second half at the 14th minute and were tied with three minutes remaining. JAKE GREEN hit a clutch three-pointer giving Piedmont the lead for good and fellow senior JAKE BALDWIN converted a three-point play inside the paint sealing the victory for the Lions.

Baldwin led four Lions in double figures with a game high 30 points. MICHAEL RUBIO connected on 18 points while JAKE GREEN and CHUCK MCCOY added 15 and 10 points respectively. BRANDEN MAYWEATHER paced PC's defense with a team high four steals.

The Lions now move to 4-1 overall. Piedmont will take on tournament host NC Wesleyan College in the championship after the Bishops defeated the University of Maine-Presque Isle by the score of 98-42.
