Four 2024 Seniors Honored by Piedmont Athletics

DEMOREST, Ga. – The Piedmont University athletic department honored four seniors for outstanding athletic and academic performance during the 2023-24 academic year.

Women's tennis's Abbey Grace Venham and men's golf's Josh Hebrink earned top senior athlete honors (female and male). The awards are voted on by each of Piedmont’s head coaches.

Piedmont men's lacrosse athlete Johnny Matrona took top male scholar athlete honors for the highest GPA while women's tennis's Dannie Evans took home the award for top female scholar.

Abbey Grace Venham racked up the accolades as a Piedmont women's tennis player including earning CCS Player of the Year twice in her career and helping the Lions to three conference championships each of the last three seasons. 

Venham is also a three time all-conference first team selection and holds the program record for combined wins with 123. 

She is second in the program in doubles wins (59) and second in program history in singles wins with 59. She was a four time CCS Doubles Team of the Week member and earned CCS Player of the Week twice in her career.

She won the clinching match in Piedmont’s thrilling comeback in the USA South Tournament Semifinals against Methodist in 2022, sparking the run to the USA South title that season. 

She is also a two-time Academic All-Conference selection and an ITA Scholar Athlete from 2023.

Josh Hebrink became Piedmont's first-ever Individual National Champion winning the title in 2023 and helping the Lions' men's golf team to a runner-up finish at the NCAA DIII National Tournament. 

Hebrink earned PING/GCAA All-America first team honors for his finish and was an honorable mention selection the season before (2022).

For his career, he is a three-time PING/GCAA All-Region selection and earned first team CCS honors in 2023. He also earned second team all-conference honors in the USA South twice in 2021 and 2022. 

In the final round of the NCAA National Tournament, Hebrink tied the Piedmont program record for individual low round shooting a 6-under 66. During his career he totaled four individual titles.

Johnny Matrona earned Most Outstanding Senior Male Scholar honors as the top graduating male student-athlete and was valedictorian of the spring 2024 graduation class. 

Matrona was a four-year member of the men's lacrosse team and posted an impressive career sealing the program record for career goalie wins ending with a 35-17 career goalie record. 

He is a two-time USA South First Team selection and a five-time USA South Defensive Player of the Week. 

Matrona earned CSC Academic All-District honors in 2023 and is a three-time Academic All-Conference honoree.

Dannie Evans was a four-year member of the Piedmont women's tennis team making an impact on the court and in the classroom. Finishing with the top GPA among graduating female student-athletes, Evans was a three-time USA South All-Academic Team member. 

Evans is a three-time Academic All-Conference honoree and a 2023 ITA Scholar Athlete. On the court, Evans increased her impact each season including posting a 10-2 record in both singles and doubles in 2024 and was named to the 2024 CCS All-Tournament Team.
